Thunderstorms with heavy localised rain (up to more than 50 mm in 24 hours) and gusts of wind of up to around 70 km/h.
Our advice
- Thunderstorms can be accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and hail.
- At events, theme parks and outdoor activities: follow the organisers’ instructions (but also use your own judgement).
- As soon as you can hear thunder, you are at risk. Lightning can strike even whilst the rain is still far away.
- Avoid open fields, tall trees and water. Do not use metal objects, such as golf clubs or bicycles.
- A lightning strike is life-threatening. Find a safe place to take shelter; for example, in a building or your car.
- If the strike is very close by, check for fire and electrical faults.
- Adjust your driving behaviour, keep your distance and drive more slowly in heavy rain.
- Stay away from trees and woods during a thunderstorm. Never take shelter under a tree.
